July 21, 2024 Can Jesus be the Messiah?
In Jesus time, the Israelites suffer from Roman occupation. They remember the Persian king Cyrus, who 500 years earlier, defeated Babylon and sent the captured Israelites back home to rebuild their lives and their temple. Prophet Isaiah calls King Cyrus the Messiah, the Anointed One, who came to free the Israelites from Babylonian captivity. Who is the Messiah to free the people from Rome now? When a person appears among them who preaches with authority, has power to work miracles and expel demons, to heal and to feed, many think: “This is the Messiah!” But Jesus, who later will be called the Christ, which means Anointed One in Greek, Jesus is not the kind of Messiah Cyrus was. He is no military leader. He is not armed with weapons of steal. To the contrary. He preaches love of enemy. When soldiers come to the Garden of Gethsemane to arrest Jesus, Peter draws his sword and cuts off the servant Malchus’ ear. Jesus stops him. No violence is to be committed in his name.
Jesus acts against expectations. So, can he even be the Messiah? Can a peace-loving itinerant preacher and healer, who lives among fishers and farmers save them as king Cyrus saved their ancestors?
