Many modern people don’t believe in God and hence, believe that miracles are nonsense. Other modern people believe that Jesus performed miracles to convince doubters. This discussion is entirely a modern people problem. Questions about God’s existence didn’t come up when the gospels were written. God’s existence was a given. In Jesus’ time there was no separation between the secular and the spiritual. The whole world was infused with the presence of the supernatural. Wherever you look, divine or demonic forces assert themselves. The ancients don’t need miracles to convince them that there is a God. Everyone with eyes to see, sees that. That’s different now. So how do we deal with miracle stories in our fact-obsessed time?
