Ephesians 4:25 – 5:2, Rules for a New Life

The letter to the Ephesians is full of practical advice, like this one: Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil (Eph 4:26-27).

Ah, how are we to deal with anger! That is an important question. Firstly, the author of the Letter to the Ephesians tells us to allow ourselves the feeling of anger, which is a natural type of human emotion, just like happiness, fear, disgust, surprise, and sadness. We are allowed to be angry, but if we use our anger to hurt people, then we sin. Sometimes anger is a reaction to injustice, and therefore justified. Sometimes it is a self-centered response to a challenging truth. Wherever the anger comes from, don’t act on it by harming others or yourself in thought, word, and deed. Don’t sin. Rather, let your anger pass. Just like sadness, happiness, fear, disgust, and surprise, the emotion of anger comes and goes. Don’t let the sun go down on it. Don’t hold on to it longer than a day. If you do, as the author says, you make room for the devil.

Come this Sunday at 10 a.m. to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front Street S in Issaquah or on YouTube and learn more about how to become more Christlike.
