Mark 9:30-37: Who is the Greatest?

Human fixation with social rank and greatness is on the mind of the disciples in the gospel story. They dream of privileges which they understand as the result of greatness. It is something very real in human life. If you have no social rank in the kingdoms of humans, you don’t count, and life gets incredibly difficult.

It is a challenge for Jesus and the early church to reconcile human reality with what they preach about the kingdom of God. Since Old Testament times, the dream is that the lion will lay with the lamb. Everybody is defined by God’s love for them and not by greatness, wealth, power, and privilege.

That concept is something that children understand intuitively. But can we understand it as adults, too? Come and find out this Sunday, 10 a.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St S, in Issaquah and on YouTube.
