Mark 10:2-16, The Question about Divorce

If we turn to our gospel story, the question about divorce is not an innocent question. They are testing Jesus, says the text. More precisely, they are trying to get him. Divorce is not a family matter in the context of this question. It is a political one. It is one that John the Baptist answered. He paid with his life for his answer. What the test is trying to do is packaging a hot political topic in theological generalities. When people in Jesus’ time hear divorce, they don’t think about a family matter, they think about King Herod and Herodias’ marriage. It’s a political union. Kings don’t marry for love, but for dynastic politics. Both had been married before, both had been divorced, and John the Baptist’s says that their marriage is invalid because of it. If that’s true, the dynastic consequences are dire.

But what does Jesus have to say about divorce as a family matter? Find out this Sunday, 10 a.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S, in Issaquah and on YouTube.
