Mark 10:17-31, Rich and Poor

In our gospel reading for this Sunday, Jesus challenges a rich man to give away his wealth. This challenge makes me wonder about the inherit weaknesses in a society which makes some people rich and many people poor.

Most rich people today think it is God’s will that they have more, much more than others. However, research confirms that the reason for why you have money or not is much more likely to be found in your circumstances than your choices.

A society which gives all the advantages to the rich, and all the disadvantages to the poor, perpetuates injustice over many generations. In the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus gives blessings and woes: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. […] But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation (Luke 6: 20b + 24). When some have much more than they need, and most do not have enough to feed their families, the world is out of balance. This is not just. This is not right. This is not according to God’s will.

How can we do better, as individuals and as society? Come to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St S and on YouTube this Sunday, 10 a.m. and find out!

“It is not the getting older that is difficult. It is the fear of getting older that plagues us. Instead of seeing a long life as a gateway to the flowering of the spirit, the growing of the soul, we are far more likely in a culture geared toward movement and dexterity, physical beauty and public achievement, to see it as the coming of a wasteland. We need to think again about the beauties of age, its freedom and its splendor. It is the “fresh life within” that age reveals to us, if we only give it a chance.”
