January 5, 2025, “A Hymn about the Cosmic Christ,” John 1:1-18.
The beginning of John’s Gospel is a hymn, with some additional texts in between. The scholar Ernst Hähnchen calls it the “Logos Hymn.”
Most translations use “word” for logos. “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God.” Hähnchen leaves the Greek logos. “In the beginning was the logos and the logos was with God.” Logos cannot be adequately translated into English. It contains much more meaning than word. It includes the concepts of thought, message, report, discourse. It also contains a metaphysical significance, capturing the divinity of the word, God’s self-revelation.
The mystical poetry of the words and images in John 1 make this hymn a song of praise for the cosmic Christ. Who is the cosmic Christ? And why should we know about him?
Come to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St S, Issaquah and on YouTube, this Sunday, 10 a.m. and find out!

In addition to the January 5 bulletin, there’s a January 5 hymn supplement via the button below. Cythia received feedback that the ELW hymnal’s print size is too small for some members who use the large-size bulletin, making reading and singing hymns more difficult. To make Sunday’s hymns more accessible to all (including those who worship online at home), she has created a hymn supplement with enlarged hymns so it’s easier to participate during worship. This hymn supplement will be inserted into Sunday’s large-size bulletins, and will be available via the button below. Please let her know if this is helpful (and whether she should continue to make it each week). Thanks!
