Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, Luke 24:1-12: “Easter Freedom”
This Sunday’s service concludes the Triduum. It is Easter Sunday, and we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus did not come to earth to die. He came to transform the world. The living Christ did not just proclaim the kingdom of God so that his death would be infused with significance. He came to earth to begin the kingdom of God, which includes the promise of new life after the suffering and the joy of this world are over. To follow Christ means to proclaim the gospel and to break bread with the stranger, to feed the hungry, to liberate the prisoners, and to fight injustice. Don’t be afraid! We are promised eternal life and freed to follow Christ without fear and courageously build the kingdom of God. We are Easter people. Good Friday is a necessary step to get to Easter, but after the first Easter when Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, the mother of James, and all the other women found the empty tomb, constant Easter is the permanent inheritance of humanity.
