April 27, 2025, John 20:19-31: Are you a Doubting Thomas?
Many people think of faith as an activity. Something we choose to do, or not to do. There is a faith statement, a church dogma, or a theological teaching set before you, and you, like an athlete in the gym, who grabs a barbell with that gravity-defying look on his face; like that athlete, you grab that teaching, dogma, or statement and then you push it up and believe it. This is a spiritual act of reality-denying determination that is like pushing 500 pounds up in the air. You roar and fight and sweat and curse and get purple in the face, because that weight keeps pushing back. It wants to go down, crush you, and teach you the lesson that no one defies the basic laws of gravity with sheer willpower. But you keep going!
