Acts 6:1-7: The Commissioning of Stephen
The church we read about in this text is the first church of Christendom. The new faith spreads like wildfire, and you find Christian communities all over the empire a few decades after Jesus’ death. They are united in the belief in Jesus Christ, but they do not have a unifying theology. Who Jesus is, is still up for grabs. Is he human, God, or deified human, God’s natural son or God’s adopted son, a prophet, an angel, an inspired teacher? Ideas of who Jesus is are varied and diverse. But there are a few things most of those early Christian communities have in common. One is the insight that people need to eat, need clothing, shelter, community, and when they don’t have these things, they should be given them by their Christian siblings. The welfare of the community was the responsibility of the church since those early days in Jerusalem.
St. Stephen was among the first to be commissioned for this ministry. Still today, lay ministers, called Stephen Ministers, are sent out to help their hurting neighbors.
