Luke 13:10-17: God’s Liberating Power
The theme of liberation is important in the Hebrew bible, which Christians refer to as the Old Testament. The memory of the liberation from slavery in Egypt is one of the guiding themes around which commandments are set and rituals are built. Here are some examples: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; 3you shall have no other gods before me (Exodus 20:2-3, NRSV). These are the opening words to the 10 commandments. Or 34The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you; and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God (Leviticus 19:34, NKJV) .This is at the conclusion of a long collection of commandments in Leviticus.
