Beware of False Prophets! What Do You Think I Am?
How do you know whether a preacher speaks for God—or merely for themselves? Jesus warns us to beware of false prophets, but the warning raises an uncomfortable question: How can we tell the difference?
Some proclaim a God of wrath, eager to condemn. Others proclaim a God whose love extends farther than we can imagine. Which message bears good fruit? Which reflects the heart of Christ?
This Sunday we will wrestle with Luther’s insight that the human heart is curved inward on itself, our tendency to judge others while excusing ourselves, and Jesus’ challenge to recognize a tree by its fruits. Along the way, we will ask a difficult question: If God loves us no matter what, who else might God love as well?
