Matthew 22:15-22: Taxation without Representation
Americans have this instinctive distrust against taxes, which makes a lot of sense if you consider the birth of our country.
In the night of December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty disguised themselves as American Indians, boarded the British ship “Dartmouth”, and threw 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor, making it, as they said in jest, the biggest teapot ever.
“Taxation without representation is tyranny!” was their argument, as they did this in protest against their colonizer, Great Britain.
A similar argument could have been made by the Galileans against Rome 2,000 years ago. Who wants to finance their occupying forces with their taxes?
Come this Sunday and learn more about taxes and civic engagement in ancient Galilee and today at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S, Issaquah, WA, and on YouTube.
