July 7, 2024, Independence Day
On Independence Day Weekend, I oftentimes remember this quote attributed to the former prime minister of the United Kingdom Winston Churchill. He is supposed to have said that the Americans will always do what is right, after they have exhausted all other possibilities. I agree, in the end, Americans will always do what is right. But it is also true that we spend a lot of time exhausting all other possibilities, and we’re not finished yet with exploring those dark alleys. That worries me, and yet, I am convinced we will do the right thing in the end.
Patriotism is not blindly waving flags and chanting; “USA, we’re the greatest and the rest of the world is crap.” Patriotism is taking the promises that our founding documents make seriously and turning them into reality. Patriotism is not giving up until the work is finished, no matter how long it takes, and how difficult it is.
So, don’t be afraid. As Christians, we are always guided by the most graceful force in the universe, the Holy Trinity, our Father in heaven, the Son who shared our lives and the Holy Spirit, who is here to stay to give us courage, to protect us, to inspire us and who fills our hearts with love. We spread that love around as best we know how. So, God bless you, God bless all the nations, and God bless the United States of America. Amen.
