Mark 7:24-37 and James 2:1-10, 14-17: How Do We Read the Bible?
How do we read the bible? How do we read those texts that are several thousand years old? They don’t read like texts we write today. Good translations do much to mitigate that, but reading the bible is not the same as reading a good night story that always leaves us feeling good, or refreshed, or fed. Reading the bible can be hard work. The bible does not often provide low-hanging fruit; to get to the good bits, you need to reach.
I think it is safe to assume that ancient nomads that roamed the land long before there was a Holy Land had quite different life experiences than we do. Hence, if they ask God for wisdom, the wisdom they seek is different from what we want to know. How they communicate that wisdom is also different from how we would do that. How do we apply biblical wisdom to our lives today in meaningful ways?
