Some words are more powerful than others. They have real life consequences.
When a police officer says, “I arrest you.” When a judge says, “I convict you.” When your date asks, “Will you marry me?” When your spouse says, “I am divorcing you.” When your interviewer says, “You are hired!” When your teacher says, ‘You failed the exam.” These words change lives.
In today’s gospel reading, Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, a reading from Isaiah 61, which is commonly read on the high holiday of Yom Kippur: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
These are powerful words, life-changing words in their original context of the high holiday Yom Kippur, which marks the beginning of the New Year in the Jewish calendar.
What are the real-life consequences of these words? Come and find out this Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St S, Issaquah and on YouTube!
