March 9, 2025, Luke 4:1-13: Temptation in the Wilderness
The first Sunday in Lent traditionally features Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. “If you are the Son of God,” says the devil, “prove it by doing this and that!” And the kind of proof that the devil demands shows that he has a vastly different understanding of who God’s son is than Jesus himself. The devil thinks God’s son should live in power and riches. He should always put his own needs first and fulfill them instantly. And he should wield his absolute power in arrogance and hubris. According to the devil, the Son of God should be like a strongman, a dictator, a potentate. But Jesus remains steadfast in his identity, which is entirely different than everything the devil could ever come up with! Who is Jesus really?
