Maundy Thursday, April 17, 2025: “Why would you serve if you could lord?”

Jesus Christ, the son of God, the second person of the Trinity, God who became flesh, is washing our feet. That‘s a servant’s role. Ultimate power humbles itself to wash the dust of the Holy Land off the feet of humanity. That is a countercultural idea. Why would you serve if you could lord? Why would you give if you could take? Why would you suffer death on a Roman cross if you could throw lightning bolts down from heaven? Through an individualistic, independent, and capitalist lens, God doesn’t make any sense.

Love often makes no sense. God’s love and grace are mysteries that are hard to understand.

We experience the miracle of Easter through the worship services of the Triduum, the three days that begin this night. We follow Jesus through his suffering and death, and we embrace the mystery of the empty tomb. Come and be part of the journey which begins this Thursday, 7 PM, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S, in Issaquah and on YouTube.
