Good Friday, April 18, 2025: John 18:1-19:42: “Crucify him!”
“First, I see the lights in the darkness of the night. Little balls, dozens of them, far away on the other side of the valley. It looks like an invasion of glow worms! But then I feel the ground vibrate under my feet and I hear the stamping of hobnailed boots, hundreds of feet, marching as one. The light from the lanterns and torches reveals a heavily armed cohort of Roman soldiers. They march and march like a big, well-oiled machine, until they form a battle line right in front of us. We are not a small group, too big for me to count when I am in the middle of it. But they outnumber us. I see an ocean of soldiers and some temple police, too. 600, I’d say. All of us are ragtag relatives and followers of Jesus. People of all ages and all walks of life, even children . . . ”
This is how I imagine that a follower of Jesus might describe the confrontation between Jesus, his friends, family, and followers and the might of the Roman army. How will the story continue? Come and find out tonight Friday, 7 PM, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S., in Issaquah and on YouTube.
