Sermon News: Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me!” Mark 8:31-38
Nowadays, the bible is something we read rather than listen to. That was very different for the early Christians. Many of those early Christians could not read or could not read well. When they met for service, they listened to the scriptures being read aloud. When Paul wrote them a letter, they met in church and the letter was read aloud. Even in Luther’s time, many people could not read and relied on the gospel being read to them.
Most of scripture are narratives, stories. Please note they are not JUST stories. The story is not the lesser sister of the fact. Facts are just facts, but stories create meaning. In our gospel today, Jesus tells a story. He foretells his suffering, death, and resurrection. And then he says: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” What does that mean? How do we do it?
