John 11:1-44, “Mary, the Tower”
Throughout recent history, we remembered Mary Magdalene as a sexual sinner, a prostitute and/or adulteress, who gave up her sinful lifestyle after her encounter with Jesus. She is not famous for being one of the most important leaders of the early church, maybe even the leading apostle. She is famous for being the most repentant sinner ever, her core sin being of sexual nature. But in the first 600 years of Christianity, Mary was known as “apostola apostolorum,”, the apostle to the apostles. Writings well known in the first 600 years of Christianity place her as Jesus’ most important companion.
