Feast Day of Mary, Mother of our Lord: “Mary, the Priest”

Many of us are very familiar with the scenes of Jesus’ annunciation and birth, and that is how we know Mary: as Jesus’ mother. And of course, that is a very important role Mary has. After all, Jesus’ birth changed salvation history forever! However, just like me and many of you, we are mothers, and we are other things as well. And that is true for Mary, Jesus’ mother, too! And so, my focus will be on Mary, the disciple, rather than Mary, the mother. Mary’s story did not begin at the moment of Jesus’ birth, and it did not end at the moment of Jesus’ death. We are used to seeing Mary as the quintessential mother, but that was only part of her identity.

It could be argued that her most important role was to be part of the founding generation of the Christian church, beyond raising Jesus. Many documents and artworks in early Christianity depict Mary as a priest, high priest, and bishop to the apostles. Do you want to know more?

Come to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S, Issaquah, or on YouTube this Sunday, 10 AM.
