Luke 10:38-42, Mary and Martha
The story of Mary and Martha has been kicked through theological gatherings since the church was young. The question always was, which of the two women does the right thing? Who is right about theology and life?
In the early church, Mary won. She walks a spiritual path while Martha takes care of earthly needs. That is necessary but was thought to be a lesser calling.
However, the early church recognized in theology and practice that women have a role in church leadership. Jesus never said anything like “Women cannot serve as priests.” Neither did his disciples, and this story seems to point into the same direction. “What Mary chose will not be taken away from her,” said Jesus.
How else did the church interpret this story over time? What makes it meaningful for us today? Come and find out this Sunday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St. S, in Issaquah and on YouTube.
