Luke 15:1-10: Who Sits at the Table?
In our story, the tax collectors and sinners come to seek Jesus out. What he should have done, according to what the Pharisees and the scribes believe, is scream like the leading lady in a B-Movie when the vampires come and then run for the hills. Instead, Jesus has table fellowship with the outcasts of society.
Modern people do not really appreciate what Jesus is doing here. We eat with who happens to sit at the table. You have a picnic in the park; and someone is already munching on his hot dogs; we sit down, and we eat whatever we have. We might have a conversation; we might just chew. First century Jews will not have table fellowship with people they consider unclean. But Jesus does. Why? How can a nice Jewish boy like Josef’s son do something crazy like that?
