Reformation Sunday, Romans 3:19-28
Lutheran Theology tells us that God’s grace is a free gift from God. A gift is by definition free. Otherwise, it is not a gift, but compensation, or payment; a reward, or a commodity that is exchanged: I give God this and God gives me that, like salvation in exchange for good behavior. But that has nothing to do with grace. That’s a deal. Keep your end of the bargain and all will be good. Don’t, and God will torture you for eternity. God doesn’t make deals. God gives grace freely.
