John 18:1-19:42
The cross is brutal and merciless. It is how the Roman Empire shows power and domination. An instrument to suppress demands for justice, peace, and love. No reason to frame Jesus’ death with glorious theology.
The true miracle happens on Easter. Good Friday is a day of pain and suffering, a valley of the shadow of death we have to pass through in order to get to Easter. Easter undoes what the cross tries to do. Easter erases everything the cross stands for. Easter is the end of death itself. No human-imposed capital punishment stands in the face of God’s judgment. No sickness, misfortune, or old age is the final word in the human life cycle. The final word always belongs to God. A God who came down to earth full of love for us, to live and die as we do. God-with-Us, Emmanuel.
