Here is the Sermon News:
Galatians 3:23-5:1: Good News and Bad News
This section of Paul’s letter to the Galatians contains one of the most cherished insights in all of Scripture, and also one of the Bible’s most harmful allegories. Let’s look at the good news first:
“There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Jesus Christ” (Galatians 3:28).
I have cited this verse so many times in my sermons, in my teachings. For me, it contains one of the foundational truths of our faith. God loves all God’s children, no matter what. God does not assess God’s children according to ethnicity or color or status or class or gender.
This section also contains an allegorical interpretation of Abraham’s family. Paul uses Sarah, Abraham’s wife, as a symbol for Christianity, and Hagar, an enslaved Egyptian woman, as a symbol for Judaism. He shows Sarah in the best light and Hagar in the worst.
In the Middle Ages, this allegory was used to justify the persecution of the Jewish minority in Europe.
