Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024

The great conquerors of history like to ride to their conquests on mighty steeds. Jesus, however, rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. Jesus most likely must pick up his feet, so they don’t drag on the ground. That looks ridiculous! But no matter how much Jesus lacks the trappings of empire, here still comes God’s son, the Messiah, to reconcile all of humanity to their creator. He conquers the world in a very different way than those who conquered before him. Jesus conquers as a servant, as a slave, as someone who washes the feet of his disciples. Someone who will die on a Roman cross and carry all the shame associated with a death like that. How can someone like this be the Savior of the World?

Come to Our Savior Lutheran Church this Sunday at 10 a.m., 745 Front Street S in Issaquah and on YouTube and find out!

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday marks the transition between the Season of Lent and Holy Week. On this day, we joyfully remember how Jesus rode into Jerusalem by waving palm leaves while processing into the sanctuary. Later in the service, we think about what comes next in the story of Jesus: His suffering and death on the cross. Using a medieval word for suffering, we call this time “The Passion of Christ.” Our Memorial Bell’s Choir Director Alice Lewis has prepared a very special piece for Palm Sunday: The Passion Prophecy by Cathy Moklebust. This music has been commissioned in Alice’s honor, and here is how she describes it: “At the beginning, I hear Christ’s footsteps within the simple melody and envision those that followed Him. As the music continues, it is clear that trouble and pain are near. The music becomes harsh. At the climax near the end, bells rush through every note possible to ring, reaching for Heavenly Peace.”

Make sure not to miss this special music on Sunday, March 24 at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church!
