Sermon News, Sunday, April 28, 2024, Acts 8:26-40, The Ethiopian Eunuch on the Road to Gaza

The Ethiopian Eunuch, a high court official, is on his way home from Jerusalem. He is reading in the biblical Book of Isaiah a passage about unjust suffering. He seeks understanding of this scripture, and an angel brings Deacon Philip to him. Philip, starting with this passage, tells him the good tidings about Jesus Christ. He says that Jesus always stands in solidarity with those who suffer. He explains how Jesus suffered himself, like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, . . . by a perversion of justice he was taken away. But then, when all seemed lost, Jesus came back to life, opened the mind of his disciples to understand the scriptures, blessed them, gave them hope, and ascended into heaven, so that all may follow. And Philip also shared about the Christian community who gathers in Baptism and shares the Lord’s Supper. As the Ethiopian is processing Philip’s words, water appears in the middle of the desert. And the Ethiopian exclaims: Look, water! Is there any reason why I cannot be baptized?—Is there any reason why he cannot be baptized? Come this Sunday to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 745 Front St S, Issaquah (and on YouTube) and find out!
