John 3:1-17: Born Again

In our Gospel text today, Jesus tells Nicodemus about the need to be ‘born from above’, or in other translations, ‘born again’. Jesus says, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” This image of being born again in water, in Spirit, in Christ, is powerful. In church history, we have come to associate the ‘born again’ expression with denominations which practice adult baptism in contrast to children’s baptism, as the Lutheran church does, and we have used it to create difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’. And while there certainly are theological and practical differences between faith groups, I invite you today to set them aside. Instead, embrace this image of being ‘born again’ as a true expression of the power of faith, the power of baptism. What does it mean to be born of water and Spirit?
